(If you want to read insanity, read the comments.) I covered the 33 1/3 reissues on Analog Planet. The double-45rpm Analogue Productions reissues of three of Dave Wilson's famous Wilson Audiophile recordings cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio (release date March 12, 2021) arrived too late to include in the XVX review but in time for this column. This 'table has been carefully and thoughtfully tuned to produce control but not a thick, overdamped personality. I know this record well, and while the Model 6 left some stuff on the table compared to the big rigs played back through far more costly phono preamps, the Model 6 delivered sonic satisfaction, and the differences were around the margins. Israel Crosby's bass lines were taut, well controlled, and nimbly reproduced, whether he was subtly or insistently plucking. When Vernell Fournier lands hard on the drums to end the openerRodgers and Hammerstein's "We Kiss in a Shadow"it should be a well-controlled dynamic surprise, and the SME 6 delivered the goods (and how!) through the Wilson XVX ( reviewed in this issue). Jamal is playing upfront, and there you are, sitting front row, center. This 1961 Ron Malo recording has drum slam, transparency, and bass finesse. I played a 1997 test pressing of a spectacular-sounding reissue of the 1961 Argo Records release, Ahmad Jamal's Alhambra, cut in 1997 by Bernie Grundman for the German Alto Analogue label (Alto AAOO5), about a decade before the Universal fire destroyed the tape. Rich, full, well-controlled sonics: For a moving magnet cartridge, the 2M Black LVB sounded detailed, open, and extended on topbut the Model 6 exploded to life with the MC Cadenza Black. Once set, push the large knob down again. To fine-tune the speed: With the motor running, hold down the large rotary knob until the speed LED blinks, then turn the knob clockwise or counterclockwise to increase or decrease the speed.

The SME 6 is a slow starter, but unless you plan on using it at a disco, that's no problem. To change speeds from 33 1/3 to 45rpm, or vice versa, turn the motor off then push the large knob atop the power supply. Now, since this bronze base modification is available it is clear that SME tonearms can play powerful and dynamic with Ortofon SPU cartridges.Press the small, chromed button to the left of the large rotary knob atop the power supply and the platter starts to spin. Before, the Ortofon tonearms were said to have better bass performance compared to the SME knife edge tonearms, specially when using Ortofon SPU or similiar cartridges. Do I recommend the bronze base ? Yes, I recommend it for all SME knife edge bearing tonearms, as it is bringing only benefits and no losses, and last but not least, it is rather easy to do the modification.īoth tonearms now have a quality that is more than a threat to 12 inch Ortofon tonearms. Review: TNT-Audio Bronze-Groundplate This is a great result…Īgain, the benefits of the modifications have been stronger than those normally gained with new cables or a change of pickup.

Nevertheless the SME change its classical character, but it sounds with the tweaks on a premier level. Voices have more chest and instruments of more body. The tonearm wins resolution, deeper and more controlled lows and a outstanding dynamic.

This is in particular interresant for owners of the Garrard 301/401 turntables, since no further spacer is necessary for the assembly of the SME tonearm.

The height of the bronze groundplate is 10 mm, so the tonearm comes approximately 7mm higher. Opposite of the original design of the tonearm with the bronze groundplate is fixed firmly and to the adjustment the entire bronze groundplate including tonearm shifted. The bronze groundplate is from the mounting points compatible to the original dimensions of SME baseplate. The bronze groundplate replace the original baseplate made of sheet metal with a more solid and resonance optimized baseplate made of bronze alloy. Die deutsche Überarbeitung wird nachgereicht.
